Fill ‘er up

We have two full length LP’s coming out this spring titled “Winter Lightning” and “Sawdust & Rum”.

We are now releasing a video for the song “For All The (Doomed) Lovers” which is off of Winter Lightning. The video was filmed in our rehearsal space in Franktown Studios by Justin Lachance.

The second song ‘Sawdust & Rum’ is the title track from our other upcoming album ‘Sawdust & Rum’ and can be streamed and downloaded from Soundcloud here:

Winter Lightning was recorded here in Montreal at the legendary Hotel2Tango with Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Wolf Parade) and features a more pop aesthetic.

For ‘Sawdust & Rum’ we traveled to Nova Scotia to self record the album in a cabin on the ocean. The album was inspired by the recent passing of Rick’s grandfather:

“This album was inspired by my grandfather’s life. His name was Ernest Keith Reid but most people called him Keith. I called him grandpa.” … “Some details may have been changed for the sake of rhyme/poetry. We recorded this in a cabin on the Northumberland Strait not far from where he grew up. It is very beautiful there.”

We will be touring Western/Eastern Canada, Northern USA, and the Eastern USA in support of these records in spring/summer. Both albums are slated for release this spring, check our website for pre-sale and the official release date, coming soon.

Bel-Air Apt. #183, November, 3:14am.

We sat at the kitchen table with the whiskey, having it out. Falling back in. Years we hadn’t spoken closer than brothers then nothing.
He wasn’t a drinker yet. Maybe this was the start. Him three years older, his own apartment and car he couldn’t pay for. I had dropped out of high school
and was aimless, heartbroken. We grew up mirrors of what we hated in ourselves and things we wished we could be. We used to write songs together,
then about each other. I was crying, saying sorry for all my arrogance and ignorance, jealousy. We were both jealous of different things.
His mother was dead. We both missed her. We missed us. We’d both been gone for so long. Where were we?
I used to say things like, ‘what would your mom think of you now’?, ‘if your mom could see you…’

Cheap shots. Not really effective when we both knew she couldn’t. See him. Because when you’re dead you’re gone, as far as we understand living.
We always agreed on that point. Even when I was weak, and played dirty. I was a poor sport. I still am. I can’t stand losing. I don’t want to lose you.
I know you need her, but you don’t need them. They are not angels. There are no chosen ones. No heaven. Don’t forget.

Until the next time, my brother.

Rick

Hugo Mudie of the Sainte Catherines recently asked us if we would be interested in playing as his backing band for a split 7″ with Joey Cape (Lagwagon) coming out on L’Ecurie. We did ”Get out of my Head’ and Bright Eyes’ ‘First Day of my Life’. Here is the pre-order link:

Our Trip To Haiti

Haiti is a country that throughout history has been dealt unfortunate hands to say the least.  Colonization, natural disaster, disease, social/racial inequality to name a few.  Until you can see it for yourself it is hard to put to words how the people overcome adversity, create, and sustain beauty in the face of what I am convinced would crush most.

The lucky ones have houses that are still intact from the earthquake.  The less than lucky ones have salvaged materials (scrap metal/tarps/wood/etc.) to house their families which can be sometimes up to 8 people living in a 10′X10′ plot.  The worst of course either have no homes or are not alive.

Walking down the street at any given moment, you are the one that stands out but you wouldn’t know it from the way the people treat you.  A thumbs up, smile, and tap of the chest let’s you know that though you are from a different land, incredibly privileged, and of different skin colour that you are still a person that deserves respect.  Above all the Haitian people respect life.

The amazing thing about volunteering with All Hands is that when they are asked by most where the money goes they generally answer ‘If you’d like to see, come down and check it out for yourself’.  Those who see how the funds are distributed could hardly argue against donating.

All Hands is passing the project onto the local volunteers who have been working/training with them since early 2010 but is still in need of funding.  I encourage people to contact them if you have any questions, volunteer if you’re interested, but above all donate.  Or maybe just catch a plane down there and see for yourself.  I’m lucky that I can count this as part of my life, you should do the same.
